High quality, innovative and effective physiotherapy treatments to promote healing, to improve movement, and to relieve pain.

Acute strain or sprain

Acute first time injuries result in an initial inflammation phase, lasting about 72 hours, that results in swelling, bleeding of the injured tissues, restriction of motion due to muscle protective response and pain. Rest, ice, compression and elevation of the injured area (RICE) are the standard recommendations in this phase. Global Physiotherapy’s unique regenerative photon therapy system has programs to reduce swelling and muscle spasm. Taping techniques for many injured areas can provide support to the healing structures. Cindy will assess the mechanism of injury and use her detailed analysis to identify if there are faulty body mechanics or issues in other areas of the body that may have contributed to your new sprain or strain.

Motor vehicle accident injuries

Motor vehicle collisions result in acute injuries that often influence more than one area of the body. The most common diagnosis is whiplash associated disorder (WAD). The central injured area is usually the neck, but the muscles that connect the shoulder and the mid-back to the neck are also often strained. This results in reduced mobility of three areas: the neck, shoulders, and rib areas. In addition, the low back and legs can be strained depending on the type and speed of impact and the influence of the seatbelt. Pre-existing symptoms in any of these areas can impact on the influence of the new injury. Most people injured from a collision are eligible for “protocol physiotherapy treatment”. The number of treatments is pre-determined by the insurance industry according to the severity of injury and established guidelines for the treatment of WAD injuries. Under protocol rehabilitation programs, the insurance company is billed directly for the treatments provided. The frequency and type of treatment is determined by the client and the physiotherapist to obtain the best outcome. Global Physiotherapy’s assessment and treatment approach targets the multiple sites of injury to promote healing and the return to pre-accident activities.

Headaches

Headaches can often be associated with motor vehicle collisions. However, persistent headaches and migraines are also candidates for a global physiotherapy approach. How do you decide if treatment could benefit you?

  • Head pain is present for one or more than one of the following examples:
    • When you wake up
    • Changes with body movements
    • Improves temporarily with heat or ice
    • You have difficulty checking your blind spot while driving
    • Your shoulder motion is limited as well
    • Pain and stiffness in the shoulder blade areas is also present

Chronic pain

Chronic pain by definition has been present for more than three months, and the pain can become progressively worse and reoccur intermittently. Persistent symptoms can develop due to a variety of causes but some pre-existing factors can include previous injury, lack of treatment, immobility of the area, severity of the injury and sleep disturbance due to pain.

Why choose Sherwood Park’s Global Physiotherapy to resolve your chronic pain? Cindy has 30 years of orthopaedic physical therapy experience. She has been examined by her peers to ensure that she meets high standards for her manual therapy, spinal manipulation, acupuncture and intramuscular stimulation skills. A comprehensive evaluation of the upper and lower quadrants of the body as well as neurological testing will be used to develop the physiotherapy treatment plan. Cindy’s goal will be to assist you to experience less pain and improved day-to- day function.

Neck pain

Neck pain is a common chronic area of tension and impaired motion. Many people consider discomfort in this area “normal”. Daily posture habits, work and leisure pursuits can influence neck pain. Waking up with a stiff neck or wry neck can be due to abnormal motion in certain areas of the neck that has been present for a period of time prior to the incident. Other than a motor vehicle collision or an acute sport injury, neck pain is often chronic. It can be influenced by the entire upper quadrant areas further away on the body due to muscle and fascia connections. Cindy loves treating the neck, She uses very specific mobilization techniques to restore motion in one treatment session. Laser, acupuncture and IMS are additional treatment options to consider for resolving neck pain.

Shoulder pain

Shoulder syndromes can be complex. As we get older, the risk of injury to the rotator cuff is more significant. The shoulder relies on optimal muscle coordination and strength to maintain mobility. When any component of the shoulder girdle gets injured or is not providing it’s share of the work load, break down in tissue and pain occurs. To resolve the puzzle of shoulder pain, a comprehensive evaluation of the upper quadrant is key to determining which treatment options will benefit you.

Low back pain

Low back pain is another common area of complaint as we age. Body habits develop muscle and joint imbalances that contribute to acute injuries and chronic, recurrent low back pain. Osteoarthritis (OA) is wear and tear of joints. It can be a cause of spinal soreness as well as ache in joints we use daily such as the base of the thumb, hip and knee. Mild to moderate OA in the knee has been shown to improve with the Regenerative Photon Therapy protocol. This treatment is only available at Global Physiotherapy – Sherwood Park. FCAMPT physiotherapists like Cindy provide a detailed assessment of the low back and of the joints in the arms and legs. The time spent assessing your painful area will make a difference in providing effective physiotherapy to help you get back to your activities.
