Treatments

We offer a number of treatments utilizing state of the art technology including Regenerative Photon Therapy for soft tissue healing, relief of muscle strain and tightness as well as pain resolution.

Advanced manual therapy and spinal manipulation are the cornerstones to restoring normal body mechanics and returning to normal activities. In addition, medical acupuncture, based on contemporary modern research and neural anatomy is available to treat multiple sites of pain and to promote healing of nerve and soft tissues. Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation or IMS is an effective targeted treatment for shortened muscles to resolve chronic conditions that affect more than one area of the body. Lastly, customized on-line exercises are provided to guide you to independent management of your problem. All of these treatment options can be considered when consulting with Global Physiotherapy physiotherapist Cindy Coneen.

Regenerative Photon Therapy

Specific cold laser combined with the Regenerative Photon Therapy (RPT) is technology that has been developed over 20 years. International Medical Instruments has conducted several clinical trials demonstrating the treatment benefits of using light therapy with specific optical windows. There are other laser and light systems available but RPT is a global treatment system that is based on the chemistry of tissue healing. Cindy has been using laser and RPT for over 15 years and has worked closely with the scientists who developed and have been continually refining the technology and treatment protocols. Recently, a six-week randomized, placebo and active controlled, double blind study showed that the RPT protocol improved knee arthritis symptoms by 51% compared to a 27% improvement with the anti-inflammatory medication, Celebrex.

Manual therapy & spinal manipulation

The Canadian Physiotherapy Association Orthopaedic Division has a continuing education program for manual therapy and spinal manipulation. Two optional written and practical exams test candidates for safety as well as knowledge and proficiency in assessment and treatment for advanced manual therapy and spinal manipulation. Cindy Coneen passed both exams in 1991 and 1992 to obtain the Advanced Diploma of Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy. Only physiotherapists who have passed these exams and maintained their knowledge and skills are Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT). You can be confident in the manual therapy and spinal manipulation techniques utilized by Cindy.

Medical acupuncture

McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario is the teaching facility for Contemporary Medical Acupuncture. Cindy studied and obtained her acupuncture certification at McMaster in 2006. Most physiotherapists in Alberta have received a basic acupuncture education from a different foundation. There are differences in how acupuncture is taught and the science to support each treatment approach. The neurofunctional treatment of pain and dysfunction taught at McMaster includes five education sessions in the anatomy lab. Acupuncture points are related to muscles, nerves, vessels and bony landmarks. Cindy uses acupuncture in conjunction with her detailed knowledge of anatomy and body mechanics to provide treatments that can improve nerve and muscle function, increase circulation to improve healing as well as relieve pain. Medical acupuncture is very effective when performed by a FCAMPT qualified physiotherapist.

Intramuscular stimulation

IMS was developed by Dr. Chan Gunn of Vancouver, BC. Instructors have taught the only certified IMS programs from The Institute for the Study and Treatment of Pain (ISTOP) and more recently from the Gunn IMS program affiliated with Continuing Education of the University of British Columbia. Candidates need to pass board approval to receive the IMS education and certification. Cindy Coneen completed the Gunn IMS certification in 2014. She finds that adding Gunn IMS to her range of treatment options has been providing quick and effective improvement of conditions such as neck and arm pain, deep hip and buttock pain and persistent elbow tendinitis to name a few recent cases. Cindy has been using dry needling techniques as part of the various medical acupuncture treatments she uses for over nine years. Dry needling is not the same as IMS. The treatment goals and principles of treatment are different. Ensure that you are receiving IMS from a certified practitioner to get the desired treatment benefits.

Exercises

A recent client commented on how much she likes receiving her home exercises by email. She saves them on her home and work computer to help her be more consistent with the recommended programme. It is possible to keep your exercises on your phone email to consult on the go. Up-to-date pictures and videos of exercises are available from Global Physiotherapy Sherwood Park. Expect the best and become independent at managing your progress.
